BURNEY HIGH STUDENTS IN KINETIC RACE
(30 Seconds • 5 Photos) This year’s 39th annual Kinetic Sculpture race saw participation once again by Burney High School students. A crazy blend of art and machine, it is considered the triathlon of the art world, in which racers have to travel 42 miles over a three-day period. With the school year coming to a close, the student’s of David Pruitt’s shop were busily rapping up last minute details before the trailer was packed for the race. OPERATION ALESHIA POT ERADICATION
(JULY 9-26, 2007 • 60 Seconds • 13 Photos) Although Operation Alesia concluded on Thursday, Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko said “the mission to eradicate illegal marijuana and clean up our public lands will continue.” During Operation Alesia, 60 marijuana gardens were raided, 283,397 plants were eradicated, 16 suspects were arrested, and 10 weapons and 200 pounds of processed marijuana were seized, he said. The Fall River girls softball team faced the Shasta Wolves in a preseason matchup, losing 7-5. It took a few innings for the girls to knock the rust loose. Hurler Emily Estes struggled with her control early on. But she found the strike zone in the middle innings along with her changeup as an out pitch. HERITAGE DAY AT McARTHUR BURNEY FALLS MEMORIAL STATE PARK

Although beautiful, the area around Burney Falls was not an easy place for pioneers to live. The largest city in the area was Redding which was a two-day trip one-way by wagon. K-9 ZEUS JOINS LOCAL DEPUTY FORCE IN INTERMOUNTAIN AREA
(APRIL 5, 2006 • 2 Min 18 Sec) Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputy Ken Koenen and his new K-9 partner, Zeus, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois raised in Holland, are on duty together out of the Burney substation. The dog’s skills include locating, handler defense, and narcotics detection. Malinois are known for their agility and speed and Koenen said Zeus has been radar-clocked at 25 mph. Unlike the department’s retired K-9 Hekki, who is quite friendly and still makes school visits, Zeus is “handler specific,” Koenen said. “He likes me and a few others who work with us and that’s it.” Other Shasta County K-9’s are Jet, who works with deputy Jason Gassaway, Cain with deputy Pat Lanham, and Maximus with deputy Pat Kropholler.
