McArthur woman drives car into tree, sustains injuries

(Nov. 29, 2007) Kathleen Jeanette Gilbert, 51, of McArthur was traveling west on Highway 299 Thursday about 10:50 a.m. when, for an unknown reason, she allowed the vehicle to drift into the opposing lane, grazed a big rig traveling east, driven by Steven L. Collier, 44, of Montague and continued traveling on the eastbound shoulder for more than a quarter-mile before striking a pine tree. Crash On Black Ranch Road Kills 2, Third Flown To Redding Hospital

(Nov. 20, 2007) Two unidentified males were killed Tuesday night when the vehicle they were in left Black Ranch Road and struck a tree. A third male riding in the back seat was concious but seriously injured and flown to a Redding hospital by helicopter. The crash happened just before 8:40 p.m. and residents living across the street from the crash site said they heard the vehicle speeding and that other drivers have been using the road as a raceway. Lisa Michelle White was traveling west on the highway when the eastbound big rig driver apparently didn't see her vehicle and turned into her path while making a left turn onto Sonoma Street.

Esteban Gonzalez, injured when the Humvee he was driving was struck head-on by a big rig in Iraq. More than 200 people showed up at Christmas Tree Lane in Burney Wednesday night to show their support for the soldier who arrived at Travis Air Force Base early Tuesday morning before returning home to Burney.

(Oct. 3, 2007) In his more than four-year battle with the Burney Fire Protection District over parking issues, 85-year-old barber Carl Bracy said the district has now added an eyesore next to his property. Bracy argues that a “handshake deal” with former Fire Chief Larry Sullivan and former commissioner Bob Maxwell wasn’t upheld, a deal that allowed him to use three parking spots neighboring on the west side of his property.

(Sept. 17, 2007) A 69-year-old Colusa man sustained moderate injuries, including a gash to his head, possible broken thumb and shoulder pain, after the water truck he was driving on Forest Service Road 37N05, about six miles northwest of Dicalite. Wallace R. Allee, Sr., was driving a Del Logging of Bieber truck south and downhill on the road about 10:40 a.m. when it appears the vehicle’s brakes failed, California Highway Patrol traffic officer John Cannon reported. The water truck clipped a pine tree, rolled onto its left side and then back on its wheels without the water tank. A 70-gallon fuel tank also ruptured, spilling the fuel. Allee was taken by helicopter to a Redding hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Pit Fire burns 40 acres, contained within 4 hours

(August 23, 2007) A 40-acre fire that started just south of the July 10 800-acre Power Fire on the PIt One grade was contained Thursday at 8:18 p.m. The fire was spotted by passing motorists and a Modoc fire engine crew, but quickly spread, spotting on both sides of Highway 299. Some 170 firefighters, eight CDF engines, four U.S. Forest Service engines, four hand crews, volunteers and equipment from Fall River, McArthur, Cassel, Montgomery Creek and other departments, plus four air tankers, two helicopters and one air attack plane battled the fire that was first reported at 4:49 p.m. Highway 299 was closed until 11:06 p.m. Click on the photo to view the video.

20TH ANNIVERSARY OF TRAPPED FIREFIGHTERS

(August 30, 1987) On a late August weekend in 1987, some 118 fires were burning in the Intermountain area. About 100 firefighters were battling a 4,000-acre lightning-caused fire about 20 miles north of Bieber in the Modoc National Forest on Sunday, Aug. 30, 1987. Called the Crank Fire, the blaze began about 2 p.m. and trapped three fire engines and 30 firefighters from Adin and the Intermountain Conservation Camp in Bieber. HATCHET FIRE BURNS WEST OF BURNEY MONDAY

(August 13, 2007) An 11-acre fire along Highway 299 just east of the Hatchet Mountain summit was first reported at 12:36 p.m. Four air tankers, four helicopters, 20 fire engines, four water tenders, eight hand crews and two bulldozers battled the blaze that was contained by 6 p.m. The California Highway Patrol closed Highway 299 for about three hours while firefighters fought the fire on both sides of the highway. AREA CRASHES INJURE 2

(August 11-12, 2007) Two persons were injured in two separate crashes during the weekend in the Intermountain area and a third person was arrested on suspicion of driving drunk. On Sunday at about 7:05 p.m., the driver of a Camero traveling north on Highway 89 collided head-on with a big rig just north of VN Lane in Hat Creek. About 2-1/2 hours later, a 52-year-old woman from Winston, Ore., was driving her PT Cruiser north on Highway 89 just south of the Lake Britton bridge at about 9:30 p.m. when she veered across the opposing lane, left the highway and hit a guardrail. She was arrested for alleged drunken driving and for also having a fully loaded .357 magnum pistol in the vehicle and was booked into Shasta County jail. On Saturday a motorcyclist traveling on Cassel Road crashed about 1 p.m. Frank Notar of Burney reportedly sustained head injuries in the crash and was flown by helicopter to a Redding hospital for treatment. PILOT AND PARATROOPER REUNITED AFTER 62 YEARS

(July 23, 2007) Robert O. Cook of Burney and Martin G. Henzel of Mission Viejo, Calif., met again after 62 years when both flew behind German enemy lines during World War II. Cook piloted the C-47 aircraft that dropped Henzel and his fellow paratroopers in Operation Market Garden, one of the most disastrous battles of the war and depicted in the 1977 film, 'A Bridge Too Far.' Operation Alesia

(July 18, 2007) More arrests were made Friday in Operation Alesia, the combined county, state and federal law enforcement raids on Shasta County marijuana growers that has been continuing non-stop since July 9. On July 18, Operation Alesia targeted three gardens including one in the Lake Britton area and two in the Plantina area. Sgt. Anthony Bertain of the Shasta County sheriff’s office in Burney said 9,100 plants were eradicated at the Lake Britton site, which was a short distance from a similar site raided by law enforcement on Sept. 22, 2005. Crossing The U.S. On Mopeds

(July 11, 2007) Traveling across the U.S. on a motorized bicycle? A crazy idea? Crazy was not among the thoughts expressed by three college-aged trekkers who view the 3,000-mile journey, traveling at top speeds of 25 to 30 miles per hour on mopeds, as nothing more than an adventurous road trip. Having left San Francisco July 5, the three passed through Burney six days later on their way to Burlington, Vt., on a trip they hope to finish by mid September. “We’re doing it to raise money and awareness for the fight against cancer,” said Kevin Corkrum, 21, of Garrison, N.Y., who graduated from Champlain College in Vermont with a degree in broadcasting. He is joined on the journey with Nick Girard, 21, of Westminster, Mass., and also a broadcasting grad of Champlain, and Girard’s nephew Tom Sands, 19, of Gardner, Mass., and a graduate from the Hallmark Institute of Photography in Turners Falls, Mass. Power Fire starts near Highway 299 and Pit One Powerhouse turnoff

(July 10, 2007) A small grass fire that started Tuesday about 11:47 a.m. next to Highway 299 just east of the turnoff to the Pit One powerhouse had grown to 60 acres within 90 minutes, 300 acres by 5:30 p.m. and eventually grew to nearly 800 acres. Hot temperatures above 100 degrees hampered firefighting efforts and sent one firefighter to the hospital with heat exhaustion. The highway was shut down for more than two hours in both directions as fire engines and other firefighting equipment stretched a quarter-mile along the road. The California Department of Forestry (CalFire) cordoned off an area with yellow tape next to the highway where it is the believed the fire started. Click on the photo to view the video.

State Parks Director at Burney Falls State Park

(June 26, 2007) The last of the 24 new family-style cabins at McArthur Burney Falls Memorial State Park are nearly complete as the director of the state park system learned Thursday. Director Ruth Coleman was on hand Thursday with her two daughters and others to view the cabins. This is the first such project undertaken by the California Department of Parks and Recreation. (June 26, 2007) Cleo Sims finished his last day on the job for Sierra Pacific Industries in Burney, having worked 49 years at the same site under three different owners. He began work there for Scott Lumber Company in May 1958 before he graduated high school and continued working as a forklift operator when the mill was purchased in 1971 by the Times Mirror Company-owned Publishers Forest Products and purchased again in 1978 by SPI. On Thursday, about 100 people, including SPI current and retired workers, family and friends honored Sims at an afternoon barbecue held at the plant. Click on the photo to view the video.

(June 14, 2007) A 35-year-old driver of a big rig sustained major head injuries early Thursday morning when the vehicle hit an embankment and overturned. Harpal Singh of Ceres was driving west on Highway 299 east of Montgomery Creek before 1:45 a.m. and hauling diatomaceous earth when he rounded a corner near a truck escape ramp, known as Potato Cut, at an unsafe speed, said California Highway Patrol traffic officer Kevin Luntey. With the highway dark, Jerry Harris, 60, of Burney was driving a white Buick east on the highway when he rounded a curve and collided with the big rig blocking his lane. Harris was reportedly not injured. In a separate incident Wednesday afternoon, a 75-year-old Lookout driver died in a solo vehicle collision near Lee Road and Highway 299 In McArthur. Federico H. Torres was traveling east on the highway about 3:40 p.m., said CHP traffic officer John Cannon. For unknown reasons, but possibly due to a heart attack or other medical condition, Torres allowed his vehicle to drift across the westbound lane, crossed Lee Road and the vehicle struck a tree. (June 10, 2007) For those who were on Main Street in Burney this weekend, there was an unusual sight to behold, a man with three burros and two dogs hiking through town. Craig Kline, also known as Cuervos, was passing through town with his companions, two Mexican born burros (Big Bad Ass Momma and Cocoa), one American born burro (Bozo) and his two dogs (Wolfy and Scooter). A reporter ran into him on Friday at La Fogata’s speaking fluent Spanish as he ordered his lunch. Walking with him to the edge of town, an interesting story emerged. (June 2, 2007) Caltrans civil engineer Michael Webb stands near blasting boundry line west of Round Mountain next to Highway 299. Demolition experts, originally scheduled to blast away part of a hillside Friday, delayed firing the explosive charges until Saturday morning. Motorists were held back from the blast zone and had about a 20-minute delay until the road could be cleared. Blasting further west along the 1.2-mile, $6-million highway straightening project is tentatively scheduled for next week. The project is expected to be completed by December. Advanced technology means 1 visit to dentist for crown

(May 30, 2007) Dental computer technology has been added to Dr. Trish Van Dyke’s office in Burney, which eliminates the need for patients to make multiple visits for crown restoration. Using a small optical camera, a three-dimensional image is taken of the tooth inside the mouth. The restoration is created using a computer which then transfers the data to diamond-coated instruments that mill a crown from a ceramic block. The milling process takes about 12-20 minutes, then the crown is polished. A unique light hardens the bonding material, uniting the porcelain and the tooth. Click on the photo to view the video.

Fugitive Arrested By SWAT Team In Round Mountain

(May 4, 2007) A Red Bluff man was arrested at his mother's home in Round Mountain Friday following an eight-hour standoff with the Shasta County special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team. Ray Cain, 23, also known as Ray Gomez Jr., who was wanted on an attempted murder charge after allegedly stabbing two security guards at the Redding nightclub Rumors last month, was arrested with his mother, Victoria Rasmussen, 46, shortly after deputies deployed tear gas and stormed the home on Black Woods Drive. Vehicle amnesty program

(April 28, 2007) Shasta County sheriff’s service officer Leah Turner, right, and Jan Daniels, contract vehicle purchasing manager for Pick-n-Pull self-service auto parts in Redding, stand among a few of the 45 junked vehicles near Black Ranch Road in Burney and turned in at the first vehicle amnesty program held in the county. Turner developed the idea where anyone is allowed to turn in a vehicle without showing ownership documentation. The hope, she said, is to reduce the number of junked vehicles littering the woods and yards. There are plans to hold this event annually. Click on the photo to view the video.

(April 28, 2007) A traffic stop by Shasta County sheriff's deputy Quentin Johnston lead to the arrest of two men Saturday evening on Highway 299 just east of the Hatchet Mountain summit. Arrested were Joshua Miles, 24, of Burney and Raul Herrera, 34, of Shasta Lake. Miles was released on $27,500 bail and facing the charges of sale of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a deadly weapon. He also had a felony warrant charging battery and vandalism. Herrera was being held without bail for allegedly providing false identification to a peace officer and for violation of parole. Former Burney H.S. student Jonathan Schmierer meets Bob Barker on Price Is Right

Lassen County Supervisor shares comments on Prop. 84 funding available to counties

(April 12, 2007) Those attending the 19th and final Sierra Nevada Conservancy’s workshop in Burney, which outlined plans to administer Proposition 84 grants, learned of the narrow guidelines in awarding those monies. California voters passed Prop. 84, the $928 million Safe Drinking Water, Water Quality and Supply, Flood Control, River and Coast Protections Bond Act last Nov. 7, with $54 million of that allocated to the conservancy. “We have some funding, not much,” said Lassen County Supervisor Brian Dahle, vice chairman of the SNC and representative of the SNC North Sub-Region, in addressing the 18 gathered for the Thursday night meeting at the Chamber Gardens in Burney. Dahle noted that of the $54 million up for grabs, only $1 million was designated specifically to be spent in the North Sierra region which consists of the counties of Lassen and portions of Modoc and Shasta. Golden Bear Store owner killed at his home

(March 12, 2007) Shasta County sheriff's deputies were called to the residence of Jon and Julie Ford of Round Mountain Monday morning where Jon Ford was found dead just before 11 a.m., said sheriff's Capt. Dave Compomizzo. The Fords own the Golden Bear Store and Deli in Round Mountain and My-T-Fine Foods in Bella Vista. Julie Ford last saw her husband about 7 a.m. Monday and called from the Bella Vista store about 10:30 a.m. to ask her husband's parents, who live about one mile away from the couple's home, to check on Jon when she couldn't reach him at the house by telephone. Jon's father Woody reportedly found his son "unconscious," Compomizzo said. The sheriff's department wouldn't say how Ford died or the murder weapon used, but said the victim sustained "obvious trauma." Click on the photo to access the video.
