(March 12, 2007) Shasta County sheriff's deputies were called to the residence of Jon and Julie Ford of Round Mountain Monday morning where Jon Ford was found dead just before 11 a.m., said sheriff's Capt. Dave Compomizzo. The Fords own the Golden Bear Store and Deli in Round Mountain and My-T-Fine Foods in Bella Vista. Julie Ford last saw her husband about 7 a.m. Monday and called from the Bella Vista store about 10:30 a.m. to ask her husband's parents, who live about one mile away from the couple's home, to check on Jon when she couldn't reach him at the house by telephone. Jon's father Woody reportedly found his son "unconscious," Compomizzo said. The sheriff's department wouldn't say how Ford died or the murder weapon used, but said the victim sustained "obvious trauma." Click on the photo to access the video. Johnson Park man dies when pickup hits tree

(February 3, 2007) A 59-year-old Johnson Park man died Saturday after the pickup he was driving skidded off a dirt road and struck a tree. Robert E. Scalf appears to have died on impact, according to California Highway Patrol traffic officer John Cannon. The man’s 14-year-old passenger, Alexander S. (January 5, 2007) As he stepped off the plane at the Redding airport, an arm cast could be seen poking through the sleeve of 20-year-old James Ontano’s clothing. The Army private first class soldier was returning home to recover from injuries he sustained when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded while he was on patrol Christmas Day in southern Iraq. A soldier ahead of him died in the blast, among the nine reported by the Department of Defense as killed or who later died from their injuries sustained on Christmas Day and the days that followed. Water board hesitant to grant adjustment to schools' bill

(December 20, 2006) A school district’s request for a rate adjustment in its 2005 sewer fees met with confusion at the Dec. 20 meeting of the Burney Water District. Rick Ranquist, maintenance and operations supervisor for the the Fall River Joint Unified School District, said the district had two large undetected water leaks in December 2005 that were corrected by the end of the month. Since sewer rates are based on water usage, he said the schools’ sewer rates were skewed in favor of the water district. In a separate incident later that evening, a 60-year-old Burney man was arrested for alleged drunken driving when the SUV he was driving slid off the road and overturned at Black Ranch and Vedder roads. Trapped firefighters in southern California brings back memories of incident here nearly 20 years ago

(October 28, 2006) The death of five firefighters in southern California brings back memories of a similar event here nearly 20 years ago. On a late August weekend in 1987, some 118 fires were burning in the Intermountain area. About 100 firefighters were battling a 4,000-acre lightning-caused fire about 20 miles north of Bieber in the Modoc National Forest on Sunday, Aug. 30, 1987. Called the Crank Fire, the blaze began about 2 p.m. and trapped three fire engines and 30 firefighters from Adin and the Intermountain Conservation Camp in Bieber. Eighteen of the firefighters were taken to hospitals in Alturas and Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills and two were transferred to the burn unit in Chico. Injuries ranged from smoke inhalation to first and second degree burns. Keith Bryan and Susan Holmes, both of the U.S. Forest Service in Adin, described how the fire encircled the 30 firefighters. Ash spill turns water grey in Burney Creek

(October 2, 2006) Telephone calls to local law enforcement and water agencies spread fears of an oil spill or sewer lines that may have backed up and were discharging pollutants into Burney Creek Monday afternoon. However, a check by state fish and game warden Jake Bushey found ash was the culprit and he traced the problem back to an area where Sierra Pacific Industries was working on their ash waste pit at the west end of Burney. The total cost of the bridge is nearly $1.3 million with federal funds picking up 80 percent, state funds covering nearly 16 percent and the county pitching in a little more than 4 percent or about $56,000. Children injured in 3-car crash near school

(September 20, 2006) A 13-year-old Cassel boy was was ejected from the vehicle he was riding in during a three-car traffic collision Wednesday morning. Regina Renae Knowles, 39, was driving her children, ages 16, 15, 13 and 11 to Mountain Christian Academy on Sandpit Road and Highway 299 about 8:25 a.m. in a Ford Expedition. She was stopped at Cassel Road and attempting to cross the highway when she drove into the path of a westbound Dodge Caravan, driven by Belinda Sue Wells, 28, of Fall River Mills. Wells locked her vehicle’s brakes and skidded into the side of the Knowles’ vehicle. The Knowles’ vehicle then spun around and hit a third vehicle driven by Julie Ann Huston, 26, of Cassel, who was waiting for traffic to clear in an Astro van, the California Highway Patrol reported. The 13-year-old in the Expedition, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, was ejected out the right side rear window. A 3-month-old riding in a child restraint seat in the right front passenger area of the Caravan was injured when the passenger side airbag deployed. Both were flown to Mercy Medical Center. The infant, who sustained a bruise to the head, was treated and released from the hospital within two days. The rest of the Knowles family sustained minor injuries, some included cuts and bruises, and all were treated at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills. The vehicle then slid sideways into the eastbound lane and into the path of a pickup driven by Leroy Robert Hutchings, 61, of San Leandro. Hutchings was taken by ambulance to Mayers Memoral Hospital, treated and released. A passenger in Martin’s vehicle, Peter German, 32, also of Wisconsin, was airlifted to Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding complaining of pain to his right side. (September 3, 2006) Sunday morning, two people sustained injuries when a small sedan rear-ended a pickup on Highway 299 at Goose Valley Road. Nathan J. Robbins, 34, of Burney was traveling west on the highway about 9:05 a.m. and was preparing to make a right turn onto Goose Valley Road when his vehicle was struck from behind. Driving the sedan was Carla L. Mueck, 27, of McArthur who reportedly didn’t see the pickup slowing to make the turn. The collision sent the pickup up an embankment where it overturned. Robbins’s 6-year-old son Evan, who was riding in the rightside passenger seat, was taken by Burney ambulance to the hospital and treated for a smashed finger. His father complained of pain. (August 26, 2006) Both Fall River and Burney high school cross-country teams held an overnight relay at BHS Pisenti Field to raise funds for the thinclad squads. The relays began about 5 p.m. on Friday and concluded Saturday afternoon. Runners each sought sponsors who would pay them to complete laps around the track. With fewer runners this year, about 10 total between the two teams, coach John Diezsi of Burney and Bill Brown of Fall River, expected to raise about $500 which will be used to pay team entry fees at cross-country meets this season, purchase uniforms and pay for transportation costs. In previous years, they have collected up to $1,000. Both teams are entirely self-supporting and receive no district funding. (August 13, 2006) Jackie McArthur was traveling south on McArthur Road in Dana Sunday when it appears she fell asleep at the wheel about 3:10 p.m. The pickup crossed over the opposing lane, traveled through a fence and hit a large tree. She was taken to Mayers Memorial Hospital and transfered to a Redding hospital where she underwent surgery for leg injuries. She was listed in fair condition Tuesday by a nursing supervisor at Mercy Medical Center. In another incident Saturday afternoon, a family traveling in two vehicles from Yreka to Bishop crashed near the bridge construction site on Highway 89 in Cayton Valley. Local fire department is purchasing agent for bioterrorism grant money

Her mother last saw Danel, also known as Nellie, asleep just before 8 a.m. as she was heading out the door for an appointment in Big Valley. The girl’s father and brother were still sleeping as well in the house at the end of Blue Bird Lane. When they awoke about 9:30 or 10 a.m., they found the door to Danel’s room open and the girl gone, but assumed the toddler had gone to Big Valley with her mother. (July 6, 2006) Deputies from the Shasta County sheriff's department conducted a six-hour search of the Pit River near Highway 299 Thursday looking for evidence releated to the burglary of the Pit River Casino in Burney where $181,000 was stolen in late May. Three suspects have been arrested and at least one of them provided the tip that sent the divers searching, said Det. Mike Matheson. Although nothing was observed by reporters being taken from the river, Matheson said he was satisfied with the day's search. Drug Bust in McArthur

(APRIL 12, 2006) On Wednesday, Shasta Interagency Narcotic Task Force agents, assisted by agents from the California Department of Justice, Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement and deputies from the Shasta County Sheriff's Office served a narcotic search warrant at the Max Michael Garcia residence located on Highway 299 across from McArthur Square in McArthur. Agents seized between 6-10 grams of crystal methamphetamine with a street value of between $600 and $1,000 that was individually packaged for sale, a small quanity of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and six firearms. Two children found at the residence, ages 13 and 15, were taken into protective custody and turned over to Child Protective Services. Garcia, 59, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine for sale, maintaining a place where drugs are used or sold and child endangerment. A second man, Gary Elmer Gray, 47, of Little Valley was arrested on an outstanding Lassen County warrant. Both were taken to Shasta County Jail and booked on their respective charges. Two of the occupants were taken by ambulance to the Burney sheriff’s substation where they were flown by helicopter to a Redding hospital. A fourth slid off Highway 299 west of Hatchet Mountain summit Jan. 22 near mile post marker 51 about 6:38 a.m. A fifth slid off Big Bend Road and down a 60-foot embankment Jan. 17 and a sixth motorist from Cottonwood also on that date skidded off Highway 299, again, just west of Hatchet Mountain. (JANUARY 17, 2006) Two persons sustained minor injuries in two separate accidents Tuesday when both their vehicles slid off the road and over an embankment. A Cottonwood motorist was traveling east on Highway 299 about 8:30 a.m. when her vehicle skidded on black ice and rolled down a 30-foot embankment. Later that afternoon another motorist slid off Big Bend Road about one-half mile north of the Hatchet Creek bridge and rolled down a 50- to 60-foot embankment. Heavy rain has Burney Creek spilling over its banks

(DECEMBER 28, 2005) Shasta County road crews were busy building a levy along Modoc Street, near Phelps Street in Burney Wednesday as waters spilled over the banks of Burney Creek. More than 2 inches of rain fell overnight, bringing the December total to more than 8 inches, leading to Wednesday’s flooding. The National Weather Service issued a small river and stream flood warning that morning that continued until 9 p.m. that evening for Burney, Fall River Mills and Old Station, among 10 areas in Shasta County experiencing heavy rainfall. Areas of concern besides Burney Creek included Cow Creek, Hat Creek and Mears Creek. Most were expected to rise three to four feet above flood stage by that afternoon. Rain was expected again on Thursday and Friday, tapering off to light showers by Saturday. More rain is expected again on New Years Day and continuing through the early part of next week. He and the other members of the Stanford Racing Team created “Stanley,” a bright blue Volkswagen SUV that finished first in a race across a 131.6-mile obstacle course in the Mojave Desert - with no one behind the wheel - and won $2 million for the university. Broken rail believed cause of 13-car train derailment northeast of Little Valley

(NOVEMBER 30, 2005) A broken track is believed to be the cause of a 13-car train derailment Saturday night about one mile northeast of Little Valley. The Burlington Northern train was carrying lumber and coiled metal when the cars overturned. Crews were working Sunday and Monday to remove the mess, and replaced the track which allowed trains to continue through the area on Tuesday. No injuries were reported. Trains were seen traveling over the new track at about 10 miles per hour on Tuesday. This is the second derailment in the Intermountain area in less than a year. (JANUARY 23, 2006) A Fall River Mills resident in his early 20s was found hanged from an oak tree in an apparent suicide near the Pit River by a local fisherman and his son Monday morning about one-half mile from the Cassel Fall River Road north of Big Eddy Estates. Shasta County sheriff’s deputies received a telephone call just before noon from the fisherman who told deputies he and his son had seen from a distance someone wearing a bright yellow jacket about 9 a.m. but that it appeared the man was kneeling as if he were praying. They continued their fishing trip upstream, but when they returned less than three hours later, they found the man in the same position and alerted authorities. Sheriff’s Sgt. Forrest Bartell, Sgt. Anthony Bertain and Ryan Harvey of the U.S. Forest Service traveled by foot and used two quad runners to reach the site, traversing muddy paths, which were covered at times with dense brush. (DECEMBER 31, 2005) As 2005 comes to a close, Intermountain area residents witnessed more rain and heavy winds on Saturday. A National Weather Service storm chaser reported stream overflows, causing rapid rise of water up to six inches deep lapping against trailers located near the Shasta County library and sheriff’s substation in Burney. Debris was being pushed by the winds and rain across Highway 299 near Round Mountain. Light rain was expected Saturday night and on New Years Day with the snow level dropping to 4,500 feet, up to five inches of snow expected at that elevation and wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour. (DECEMBER 20, 2005) Grace Tobin, 84, of Burney, will be cited for making an unsafe turn from Highway 89 onto Clark Creek Road Dec. 20, the CHP said. She was driving north on the highway about 1:18 p.m. when she turned into the path of a vehicle traveling south and driven by Bruce Crocker, 59, of Depoe Bay, Oregon. Colorado television station 9News reported Wednesday night Hawkins has been hired. "Dan Hawkins is the type of coach who represents virtually every expectation that I outlined," CU athletic director Mike Bohn told Denver station KUSA-TV. "And if we're fortunate enough to get this completed and have Dan Hawkins announced as our coach, then we will have been very, very successful and we will be well on our way to restoring a sense of pride in the Golden Buffaloes." (NOVEMBER 10, 2005) A 41-year-old Burney man was in Shasta County jail Thursday night facing charges of allegedly pointing a rifle at a deputy and domestic violence. Kevin Lance Farley was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after his wife went to the Burney sheriff’s substation about 2:30 p.m., saying she had been assaulted and that her husband was acting crazy, was suicidal and tearing up their house, said Sgt. Forrest Bartell. Farley was arrested and taken to county jail in Redding where his bail was set at $500,000. Found inside his truck were seven rifles, two shotguns, a grocery bag full of ammunition and food rations, two scanners and a two-way radio, deputies said. (OCTOBER 20, 2005) A tractor-trailer hauling 82 head of cattle overturned on Highway 299 near lower Woodhill Drive in Montgomery Creek late Thursday. Seven of the cows escaped and four died in the accident. The remaining cattle were freed from the wreck and kept in a nearby fenced pasture. Search continues for McArthur man who allegedly assaulted California Highway Patrolman

(OCTOBER 9, 2005) Law enforcement officers were searching Pittville Sunday night looking for a suspect in the assault of California Highway Patrol traffic officer Kevin Luntey. Luntey, who is assigned to the Burney resident post, stopped to assist at a vehicle versus deer traffic collision at Pittville Road and Peppermint Court, about one-half mile south of Highway 299 at 7:15 p.m. While questioning the driver of the pickup, Shawn Christopher Cunningham, 25, of McArthur, and a known parolee of Shasta County, Cunningham reportedly swung around, hitting Luntey in the head with an elbow and knocking the officer to the ground. Pot raid near Lake Britton nets 1,700 plants on Thursday

(SEPTEMBER 22, 2005) Some 1,700 marijuana plants, with a street value of between $5.9 and $6.8 million were uprooted or chopped down Thursday on U.S. Forest Service land about five miles northwest of Lake Britton. More than a dozen federal law enforcement patrolmen were assisted by a military Black Hawk helicopter from Sacramento, which airlifted the stalks, some as tall as 15 feet, to a staging area just west of Rock Creek. Thursday’s operation followed discovery of the gardens by two hunters about 11 a.m. Monday when their hounds treed a bear north of Screwdriver Creek. Funeral for Lookout fireman

(SEPTEMBER 17, 2005) Funeral services were held Saturday for Robert Lee Pauley, 55, of Lookout who died in a single-vehicle accident while responding to an emergency call. The Lookout volunteer fireman, EMT, former fire chief, Navy veteran and leadman at Big Valley Power Company in Bieber was remembered in stories, including one by his sister on one of the last times she saw him, and a coworker who recalled an EMT class they took together. Area firefighters and emergency medical personnel sounded vehicle sirens in Pauley’s honor and an honor guard salute was provided by members of the Adin VFW. The Highway 89 crash was a 9:30 a.m. solo vehicle accident that involved two adults and three children from Nevada. The Highway 299 crash happened about 11:45 a.m. and involved four vehicles, including one that careened down a steep embankment and into a creek. A westbound 18-year-old Anderson driver reportedly crossed over a solid yellow line and sideswiped two vehicles, one which was from the Department of Justice. Girls who ran away from Canby group home arrested in Burney

(SEPTEMBER 4, 2005) Four girls who ran away from the I’Sot group home for juveniles in Canby at midnight Sunday were arrested about 18 hours later in Burney after the van they allegedly stole ran out of gas. The girls, between the ages of 15-17, made their way to Burney before running out of gas in the Rite Aid parking lot. Man arrested for DUI in collision with pickup in Burney

(AUGUST 24, 2005) A 37-year-old McArthur man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and driving with a suspended license after the big rig he was in collided with an oncoming pickup Aug. 24 on Highway 299 in front of Safeway. Stephen Bowman, Jr., was traveling east about 30 miles per hour through Burney at 2:15 p.m. and hauling a trailer full of mint for Corder Farms of McArthur when he allowed his vehicle to drift to the left and into the opposing lane, the California Highway Patrol reported. His vehicle struck a pickup towing a cargo trailer and driven by Kenneth Givens, 36, of Antelope who was returning home after a hunting trip with Thomas Webster, 43, of Citrus Heights. The trailer rolled over and the collision also resulted in a small spill of diesel in the roadway from the big rig that required a lengthy cleanup operation, the CHP said. Another fire that started Tuesday afternoon and burned about 165 acres in Glenburn, off of Brown Road, has been contained. Crash injures 3 Hat Creek residents on Cassel Road

(AUGUST 23, 2005) Three Hat Creek residents sustained injuries in a single-vehicle accident Tuesday on Cassel Road, about one mile from Highway 89, including the 27-year-old driver, a 16-year-old and 2-year-old passengers. Thomas McCloud was traveling north at the speed limit of about 55 miles per hour in a small sedan about 1 p.m. on Cassel Road and approaching a slight hill when he allowed the vehicle to drift to the left into the opposing lane, the California Highway Patrol reported. Seeing an approaching vehicle, he swerved to the right, but lost control, skidding back across the opposing lane, hit a large rock and then an oak tree. McCloud is believed to have sustained a broken leg and his two passengers are believed to have sustained minor injuries. McArthur Horse Cutting Show draws 700 entries from around western United States

(AUGUST 14, 2005) Some 700 entrants competed for $60,000 in prize money at the 14th annual McArthur Horse Cutting Show held Thursday-Sunday at the Inter-Mountain fairgrounds. The horse and rider are given two-and-one-half minutes to cull a calf from the herd and are judged on their performance.
