The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) held a ribbon cutting ceremony Nov. 2 at the Bogard Safety Roadside Rest Area on Highway 44 between Old Station and Susanville. The rest area along the Volcanic Scenic Byway received a $3.03 million makeover during the past two years and included a new rest area, removal of the old rest area built in 1965 and restoration of the land to natural conditions. The entrance to the rest area was relocated to increase site distance for motorists and enhance safety. The facility, upgraded to Americans with Disabilities Act compliance, also has a nine-camera security system and a California Highway Patrol staging office. Hat Creek Construction built the facility.
